As you step from the carriage your feet striking the cobbles echoes down the dark empty street.
“It’s going to be a cursed moon tonight”. The carriage driver claims, and you follow his gaze to the red ringed moon hanging above the rooftops. “Be careful”. He continues.
As if on cue a blood-wrenching howl fills the night. The hairs on the back of your neck rise and the shadows seem to grow longer. You pull up your collar, grab your musket from the carriage and head into the darkness.
The League of Seekers is a horror RPG set in an alternate 18th century Europe, around 1762. The age of enlightenment has begun, science and religion jostle for control over the masses. A mad king sits upon the throne of England, monsters terrorise the peasants in France. The forests of Eastern Europe harbour beasts from folktales and legends. The Ottoman Empire has begun to lose its grip and to the south a sleeping god stirs, his dreams scratching at the thin veil that separates reality from the nightmare.
The characters are part of a secret society called The League of Seekers, invited because of their skills and knowledge. The characters are sent to vanquish the horrors, thwart cults, and banish the cosmic terrors that wish to control the world. The League of Seekers is part Lovecraftian and part folklore taken from the stories of H.P. Lovecraft and the stories and myths of Europe.
The setting draws influence from movies like Brotherhood of the Wolf and The Libertine, and computer games like Bloodborne.
The game is set in a period of history overlooked by most RPGs, the 18th Century. A time of change and upheaval where superstition runs alongside reason.
Time is a factor in the game and the GM will use a time mechanic that will indicate whether the following night will have a cursed moon. A cursed moon affects the game by making the NPCs more aggressive, magic more effective, and the veil thinner, meaning more monsters stalk the night.
Each character must also battle their inner beast during the cursed moon, keeping hold of their humanity so they do not succumb to the blood rage.
A horror game would not be complete without sanity, but we do it differently, where sanity helps you keep a grip of your senses, but insanity reveals the hidden things only the afflicted can see, showing a world where the invisible terrors rule. Some beasts can only be seen and confronted by those that are slowly losing their minds.
18th century Europe was a grim place, disease was rife, the cities were filled with depravity and the destitute, the gap between the rich and poor was filled with filth and hunger. In our alternate Europe, this is exponentially worse, with creatures terrorising the peasants, monsters from myth stalking the dark forests and cults summoning horrors from beyond the veil.
The moon is looked upon with fear as the population awaits the curse to creep across its surface turning the celestial body blood red. A cursed moon brings with it monsters and the rage, a plague of the blood that turns the sane into beasts.
As Seekers you must hunt the night, risking your lives to stave off the horror and put an end to the worshippers that wish to bring the Old Ones forth and awaken the dreamer beneath the ocean.
-The Asylums are filled with Truth
The League of Seekers uses a roll under percentile system, with a selection of skills and statements.
Characters can also choose past careers, advantages, and disadvantages. There is also a selection of other stats, sanity, humanity and dark knowledge that will play a part in beating back the terrors.
Experience is through actions that affect individual skills so that characters only advance in those abilities they use.
